ABOUT
I'm a multi-instrumentalist with experience playing Live in small and large venues, specialising in acoustic rock and synthwave genres. I offer production lessions in Ableton and Cubase, instrument tutorials and am available for event hire (see 'Services').
I use my programming skills and experience as an engineer to build complex hybrid synthesisors (VST plugins) using additive, subtractive, FM, wavetable and vector (sample-based) synthesis techniques (see 'Downloads').
You can listen to my music on Instagram or all major streaming platforms, or request the password to the portfolio section which showcases more sensitive compositions to media that cannot be widely shared.
Feel free to follow me and share my profile if you feel someone would be interested. I tend to post an eclectic mix of draft compositions on instagram so you never know what's coming up!

The music draws inspiration from other games such as Kingdom Rush and Dungeon Defenders and uses drums to convey a military-strategy-feel with some medieval-style instrument sounds, conveying fun, excitement and playfulness, without becoming too dark and brooding like some medieval music can (particularly those aimed at older audiences). Each level has a different melody that is simple enough to hum and interesting enough to be catchy. A choir melody and French horn counter-melody are used, a soft timpani rhythm (reminiscent of a bodhran), taiko hits, and brass braams (which lean into the ‘battle’ theme), and accents from the trumpet and mandolin.
Custom transitions (stingers) have been defined, such as a simple harp gliss when moving between the menu and the other scenes to give feedback to the user that something is changing. Sounds for the ‘FireStorm’ and ‘Starburst’ special abilities have been created using granulated foley sounds to emulate fire explosions and crackling electricity respectively.

It read: “Free to take, I’m your little worry worm. Keep me near and squeeze me tight. Tell me your worries and everything will be alright…”
I was moved by the intention. Someone made this and left it here, knowing that it might find someone who needed it.
If you've ever been in a very dark place (like I have), you’ll know how much even the smallest sign of kindness can mean.
This is your reminder: kindness matters. You matter.

Lots of traditional orchestral instruments used (using Sonuscore The Orchestra), plus some uniquely south Asian instruments such as the GuZheng and Koto. There is also a version of this with vocals on my Bandcamp page, but ultimately I felt that this instrumental version captured the feelings I wanted to convey.

The music uses both electronic and orchestral elements, including ‘epic’ style percussion to provide a contemporary feel. The menu music has a strong melody with a rousing brass line to create excitement and anticipation. The exploration music attempts to make the player feel the loneliness of space using pads, bells and sound design with lots of reverb and echo. The glitches and crackling synths speak to an energy field in this futuristic fictional world. The combat music ramps-up the tension with clave-style basses, pounding percussion and pulsing synths! Thanks to @mntra.io for the 'bowed cymbal' from Oracle X! You can hear it at 00:37, it's haunting!
If you'd like to listen to the full tracks you can go to my Bandcamp using this link: https://yi-music.bandcamp.com/
The tracks will also be published shortly on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer etc.
Happy gaming!

The visuals are taken where I recorded the sounds, mostly just using my mobile while I was out-and-about so I'm sorry for the wobbly footage! ;) Although a big thank you to @graysonflorenceproperty, who provided the beautiful aerial shot of Staverton marina - you can have a peek at my back garden! ;)
Now turning a squirrel into a synthesiser is not easy, ha, so if you'd like to support my work then please visit my Bandcamp site (https://yi-music.bandcamp.com/music), but I'm also available on most major streaming platforms (https://artists.landr.com/055905816188).

This is an example of vertical layering of music within a game system (I'm using Wwise and Unity). The music reacts as the player moves between the barrens and the town, in both day and night. The instrument palette and effects help emphasise the loneliness and emptiness of this 'post-apocalyptic' landscape and the music draws heavily on the horror genre, with large amounts of sound design to increase the tension. The music is designed to sit just under the ambience and environmental effects to support the player immersion, rather than dominate.
The 'In-town' music is written in G Major which can be described as rustic or peaceful, and aims to give a feeling of relative safety with a sadness to it. At night, the key switches to A Minor with the addition of 'vocal breaths' to indicate this is a subtly more vulnerable or sinister time in the game. The 'Out-of-town' music during the day is also written in A minor to give a sense of melancholy, and features many sound design elements to give a more ‘eerie’ feel. The bells have a large amount of reverb and delay to give a sense of space but also mystery. The night music features even more sound design to the extent that all notes are used in the chromatic scale to produce something much more dissonant and threatening - and the drums become louder as you approach the burning car wreckage! Perhaps it's a boss fight! ;)
Thanks again to Mntra.io for providing the amazing sounds from the Naada (strings), Sur (drones), Huracan (percussion) and Klavir (piano) instruments. One of my favourite composers using MNTRA's instruments is Gareth Coker, you can listen to his music for Ori & the Blind Forest on Bandcamp (https://garethcoker.bandcamp.com/album/ori-and-the-blind-forest-original-soundtrack).
If you do want to explore my other compositions, you can head over to my website (www.yimusic.co.uk), bandcamp (https://yi-music.bandcamp.com/) or find me on most major streaming platforms.
